160 years ago, on September 12 and 13, 1860 in Nice, it was the effervescence of the great days. The whole city is full of flowers and flags, the walls have been freshly repainted, the streets are full of people dressed in sunday clothes. From the villages of the upper country, delegations came down through the deep valleys. The event was of exceptional importance for this city, which at the time had barely 40,000 inhabitants.
Indeed, Emperor Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugénie came to spend two days in Nice during their long journey to the South of France. An imperial couple in Nice was a first! The noise of their arrival had run since June, after the vote of the inhabitants of Nice had ratified the choice of their new sovereignty : namely that the former county of Nice, hitherto linked to the House of Savoy, be reunited with France and form the new department of the Alpes-Maritimes.
