Spain, 1938. We are in Belchite, a small town not far from Zaragoza, in the nationalist zone. Carmela and Paulino, two traveling comedians, have to perform in front of an audience of Franco and Nazi troops. Also present in the room are members of international brigades who will be shot the next day.
In addition to its historical dimension and its universal scope, since it is from this laboratory of the worst that World War II will be born, the play strongly questions the place of the artist in a world of injustices. Who should he practice his art for? What are its limits ? Does art have a political function?
José Sanchis Sinisterra, Spanish author, wrote "Ay Carmela!" In 1986. It was created the following year in Zaragoza and is now being produced all over the world. Carlos Saura adapted it for cinema in 1990.
